The Impact of ABET

Are we training willy nilly in South Africa?

Many organisations train and develop their employees continuously. A business is not just a group of people coming together to work on a daily basis, it is a team that works together in order to achieve a shared goal and ultimately produce profits. That is precisely why it is important to train staff effectively. And yes, there are countless benefits one can achieve by investing in true staff development. Surely then every workplace should ask what the impact of ABET or training is?
It is imperative that the impact of ABET and all training done, is to say the least, positive. The impact of ABET or any training on an organisation cannot be determined by the results of a three-hour examination or what the Training Provider believes and states! One of the key questions to ask and answer in an impact assessment is, SO WHAT?” So what has changed? This question takes the project beyond the surface into what change really took place in the lives of the people involved – not only the beneficiaries – all of the stakeholders in the process. Impact Assessment is defined as “the systematic analysis of significant and/or lasting change – positive or negative, intended or not – in the lives of target groups, brought about by a given action or a series of actions”. The impact of ABET needs to be assessed through progress reports, interviewing workplaces, actual behavioural change and the overall progress in an individual’s career.

Triple E Training is an organisation that passionately lives by its motto Changing Lives Together, and it is critical that their whole team understands what difference is truly made by their training, and especially how this informs and improves effectiveness in each workplace. Impact assessment is a growing trend and we need to explore this as a possible tool. Director of Operations, Sharon Blignaut, suggests it perhaps time to develop the Impact Assessment Tool to ascertain the influence of ABET and other training. “We have been commissioned by a lcinet to do exactly this, hence the research and my recent trip to London to attend a seminar on this subject.” She states that Triple E believes wholeheartedly that their ABET and FLC has excellent impact on businesses, but don’t believe just my words. Let’s assess and see!
