How to comply with the skills development element of the BBBEE scorecard

Requirement: Compliance to the skills development element of the BBBEE scorecard

My client, that operates in the wholesale retail industry based in Welkom in the Free State, contacted me to provide guidance on the best way to comply to the skills development element of the BBBEE scorecard. The company compiled a Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) and one of the goals set out in its skills development strategy is to train low-skilled unemployed members of the community.

Solution: AET – Category B training on the skills matrix

I chose to recommend Adult Education and Training (AET, also known as ABET) which is classified as Category B training on the skills matrix. Not only will AET address the skills development needs of my client but also help them score the highest possible points on the BEE scorecard.

Expert opinion: Skills development and the BEE scorecard

The table below shows a breakdown of point-allocation on the generic BEE scorecard.

Skills development and the BEE scorecard

Skills development, which is an important contribution to the country’s achievement of economic growth and social development goals, is one of the easiest priority elements to score high points in. One of the reasons for this is that it is no longer necessary to train only employees. Your business can now claim for training costs of unemployed people from within the community, and get bonus points if you absorb some of the learners into your workforce.

I am passionate about giving back to the community and that leads to my choice of skills development being that of community training. Triple E Training is one of a handful of fully accredited private AET service providers in the country and is able to help you score the maximum points in categories 2.1.1.1 and 2.1.1.2, and also in category 2.1.2.2. That is a total of 16 out of the potential 20 points of the skills development element of the generic BEE scorecard; 80% compliance just through AET. A further 4 points can be scored through learnership, but that is a topic for another day.

Call to action: Triple E Training – your accredited AET service provider of choice

With Triple E Training as its partner my client will be able to reach the skills development goals as set out in its WSP and give back to the Welkom community. The AET programme will further contribute to my client’s Annual Training Report (ATR) and ultimately result in the maximum score obtainable under the skills development element of the BEE scorecard.

Summary

At a cost of R100k my client, that operates in the wholesale industry based in the Free State, has embarked on phase 1 of an ongoing skills development project for a group of eight low-skilled, unemployed community members. This AET programme, that is classified as Category B training on the skills matrix, will not only help my client reach its BEE goals but also qualify the company to claim its SETA grant.
