The Slavery of South Africa

Setting South Africa free from the Slavery of Ignorance.

Slavery is illegal in nearly every country on earth yet in reality, people, today, are living as slaves everywhere in workplaces, on farms, in homes and other undisclosed places of the world’s richest and poorest nations. Slavery in its literal sense is appalling. Slavery in the form of ignorance is more subtle, more treacherous and possibly South Africa’s biggest current challenge.

The slavery of South Africa ensures that you are vulnerable and unable to think on your feet. You are easily manipulated. You work for very little return if you get work at all. You make decisions without thought of consequence. You cannot handle critical aspects of life such as finances and when you try it’s almost always disastrous. You cannot reason, interpret and think for yourself. You cannot debate or argue for basic rights. Your life decisions, if you even know they are in existence, often lead to pandemonium. You are bullied and intimidated by many, even your own family. This is the slavery called ignorance. It is the result of little or no education and ineffective or non-existent training.

Accreditation of Training Providers, new (and ever-changing) BBBEE/BEE codes, registrations with various government departments and amendments to policies and piles of legislation, is commonplace in this field. Many changes have come about. But none of these factors have freed us from the slavery of ignorance. There needs to be a complete and focused dedication by leaders in government and of industry to setting South Africa free from the slavery of ignorance, over and above all of the legislation. There needs to be a standard of excellence in all of the training and education interventions, not just mere policies. We need to implement training with excellence as our goal.

Real freedom from ignorance can only be effected by unique and wholesome training that addresses the massive illiteracy and innumeracy fissures and the enormous scarce skills facing industry. Interventions such as the GETCA which is more learner-centred and accessible to the adult learner and takes the needs and unique characteristics of the adult learner into account, will help in setting South Africa free from the slavery of ignorance. Fortunately there are numerous interventions like the GETCA, that are long and short, technical and academic, some unit-standard and some outcomes-based programmes that will change lives.

Training cannot solve all problems. But it’s unarguably one of the solutions South Africa can implement that brings tangible results, concrete individual progress and perceptible change in both workplaces and individuals.

Set South Africa free from the slavery of ignorance. Educate, train and do it with excellence.

We must construct that people-centred society of freedom in such a manner that it guarantees the political liberties and the human rights of all our citizens.”
