Custom materials development are one of the key focus areas of the Adult Basic Education and Training programme rolled out by government to address the issue of the high illiteracy rate amongst adults in South Africa. The materials have been created to provide education in all 11 official languages and with the assistance of linguists and practitioners take into account the cultural differences inherent in different population groups. The materials also take into consideration the unique requirements of learners, teachers as well as the industry sector in which the education and training is being aimed at. The ABET materials are mainly available in print although some materials are available in other mediums.
