What is a learnership?

According to the South African Qualifications Authority a learnership is a work based learning programme that leads to an NQF registered qualification. Learnerships are directly related to an occupation or field of work, for example, business practice, generic management, or manufacturing, engineering and related activities.

How does a learnership work?

The learner is required to complete a theoretical course and practical training at the workplace in order to graduate. Unemployed adults can also take part in a learnership if the company is willing to take them on; this is called a sponsored learnership (note to web developer: link to second article about sponsored learnership). The theoretical part of the training is provided by an accredited training service provider, while the practical learning takes place at the workplace under the guidance of a mentor.

Learnerships last for the duration of the time to complete the qualification. During the learnership, learners will be required to complete assignments, tasks and practical tests and projects. They will be formally assessed in the classroom and workplace. If all these assignments are completed successfully, the learner will be awarded an NQF-registered qualification, that is recognised nationally. The learner will receive a certificate stating the qualification and the area of skill development.

Before your company embarks on a learnership programme make sure that you understand the entry requirements, because it is different for each type of learnership. We at Triple E Training will be able to guide you as to the requirements of the learnership you are considering.

Who should participate in a learnership?

We believe that companies should assist its employees with a clearly defined career path. This will help managers to identify a learnership that will support the employee’s career goals. Unemployed people from the community can also take part in a learnership. Companies must select unemployed learners based on the actively economic population (EAP) targets for their specific region.

Learnerships should form an integral part of any company’s 5-year skills development plan.

What are the benefits of learnerships?

Through learnerships government promotes access to education and training because the learnership allows the learner to get started on a career while studying for an educational qualification.

Learners that embark on learnership programmes benefit in various ways:

  • Improved employment opportunies; and
  • Obtain a nationally recognised qualification that is relevant to the industry sector.

By embarking on a learnership programme your company therefor contributes to the economic empowerment of individuals, and the economic development of the country.
