It’s the “Grade 9” for Adults
In the standard school system, Grade 9 is a massive milestone because it’s the end of the General Education phase. For an adult who maybe didn’t get that far in school, the GETC is the equivalent. It sits at NQF Level 1. Getting this doesn’t just mean you “passed a course” it means you officially have a qualification recognized by the national framework, which opens doors to trade schools and the Adult Matric.
The “Why” Behind the Math and English Requirements
You might wonder why you need to be competent in ABET Level 3 English and Math just to start the GETC. It’s basically to make sure you don’t get overwhelmed. The GETC requires you to take on six subjects at once. If you’re struggling with basic reading or core numbers, juggling six different topics would be a nightmare. By making sure your “fundamentals” are solid at Level 3 first, the program sets you up so you can actually pass those six external exams instead of hitting a wall.
