Not all “Level 4” training means the same thing. ABET Level 4 and NQF Level 4 are often confused, but they reflect very different educational stages. Getting this right helps your business support employees more effectively and plan training with greater confidence.

There is often confusion between ABET Level 4 and NQF Level 4. While both are called “Level 4,” they represent very different stages of learning.
ABET Level 4 is part of foundational education and is equivalent to a Grade 9 level. It focuses on building core skills in areas such as English and Mathematics, preparing learners for further development.
NQF Level 4, in contrast, is a full qualification equivalent to Grade 12.
This means that employees enrolled in ABET Level 4 are still working toward that level, not yet at a matric or equivalent qualification.
Understanding this difference helps with better planning of training pathways and ensures that employees are supported at the right level.
