Are Your Learners Starting with the Right Subject?
Not every learner should begin with the same subject. A diagnostic assessment shows whether English or Mathematics is the most suitable starting point, helping each learner build the foundation they need for successful progress.
The decision to begin with English or Mathematics should be based on the learner’s diagnostic assessment results.
Each learner enters training with a different level of understanding. Some may already have enough English ability to begin Mathematics, while others may need to strengthen their language skills first.
Starting with the right subject helps learners understand the material, participate with greater confidence, and progress more effectively.
When a learner’s English level is very low, English should usually be the first priority.
This is particularly important for learners who are at a pre-ABET level or who have very limited literacy skills. Beginning with English gives them the reading, comprehension, and communication foundation needed for the rest of the programme.
A stronger English foundation can make later training feel more manageable and less overwhelming.
Mathematics training is delivered and assessed in English.
Learners need to understand instructions, questions, explanations, and mathematical terminology before they can engage properly with numeracy content.
Even when a learner understands basic numbers, a weak English foundation may make it difficult to follow calculations, solve word problems, or complete assessments successfully.
For this reason, learners need a sufficient level of English comprehension before beginning Mathematics.
Learners with stronger English assessment results may be able to begin with Mathematics.
If they can read, understand, and communicate confidently enough to manage the training content, Mathematics may become the next appropriate area of development.
The assessment helps confirm whether the learner has the language foundation needed to cope with the numeracy programme.
Correct placement benefits both the learner and the facilitator.
Learners are less likely to feel overwhelmed or disengaged, while facilitators can focus on teaching the subject instead of repeatedly addressing language barriers that should have been resolved first.
This creates a smoother learning experience and helps the programme remain focused on its intended outcomes.
The video recommends approximately 120 contact hours per subject.
This gives learners enough time to understand, practise, and apply the content instead of rushing through important foundational skills.
When learners start with the correct subject and receive enough contact time, the rest of the training journey becomes easier, more structured, and more effective.
