The department of labour supports the various Sector Education and Training Authorities in their quest to improve the skills of workers across South Africa. Many low level labourers do not have any education and most cannot even read or write. Through the Adult Basic Training and Education initiative, the goal is to ensure that every South African has basic literacy and numeracy skills. This is to improve the standard of living of many underprivileged citizens as well enable them to have access to higher level work in the job market.
