The food manufacturing industry has unique health and safety issues that must be strictly adhered to at all times. Employees in this industry must therefore have a basic education as well as training regarding hygiene and other factors that are inherent to the safe manufacture of foods. Yet many employees in this industry are uneducated and even illiterate. The Sector Education and Training Authority provides registered employers with funding as well as access to the Adult Basic Education and Training programme for these under-skilled employees. The programme teaches learners basic reading and writing skills as well as maths that can be implemented in the workplace.
