Challenge: Employees have developed a negative attitude towards staff training

My client, which operates in the food and beverage industry in Wadeville (Gauteng), is responsible for a high volume production chain and thought it near impossible for Adult Education and Training (AET) to be implemented without interrupting the organisation’s production schedule.
Apart from the challenge around production schedules the employees themselves have in time developed a negative attitude towards staff training initiatives.
For these reasons my client has never attempted outsourced Adult Based Education and Training (ABET) before although they realise its importance not only to the benefit of the employees but also to the benefit of the company with regards to skills development as part of the Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) scorecard.

Solution: Awareness will increase the success of ABET

The most important challenge to address on this project was to obtain buy-in for ABET with the employees. My client identified a group of 22 staff members for the staff training project and Triple E Training worked closely with the relevant union to gain the trust of this group of employees.
Because we understand the importance of skills development from the employer’s perspective and also the benefits of basic adult education for the individual involved, we are not the kind of training provider that signs a contract, conducts the training and then leave. Our ABET project starts with an awareness session aimed at the relevant stakeholders: the employees, the unions and senior management. Collaborative awareness will add value and increase the success of the ABET learning initiative for both the employer and the employees.
In order to address the secondary challenge, the interruption of the production schedule, it was decided to provide my client with an ABET facilitator on-site five days a week. The group of 22 learners were divided into two groups that had access to the facilitator eight hours per day, utilising the organisation’s in-house training facilities.
Due to the nature of my client’s business it was proposed to run the ABET initiative as an on-going project instead of the usual 120 hours per learning area in fixed class times. The on-site facilitator offers Communication in English as well as Mathematics classes to the learners with the aim to advance learners from ABET Level 1 to Level 4 within reasonable time.

Employee buy-in by definition is when employees are committed to the mission and/or goals of the company, and also find the day-to-day work personally meaningful. Buy-in promotes engagement and a willingness to go the extra mile which is why we at Triple E Training take this first step in our ABET initiative to ensure that learners are open to receiving the basic foundational learning tools, knowledge and skills.
ABET addresses the fundamentals of reading, writing, understanding, listening, numeracy and mathematics ultimately improving communication and problem solving which has a direct positive impact on production.

With Triple E Training as its partner my client has managed to obtain buy-in from its employees for outsourced BEE staff training that was implemented without any impact on the production chain.


At the cost of R30k per month my client, in the food and beverage sector in Wadeville (Gauteng), embarked on ABET for a group of 22 employees. With an on-site BEE training facilitator on-site five days a week for eight hours a day the learners have the ability to advance through ABET Level 1 to Level 4 without any impact on my client’s production schedule.
