Challenge: Low-skilled employees have a direct impact on the productivity of the companyAs one of the largest manufacturers of paper and board packaging globally my client, based in Kya Sands, conducted a skills audit after evaluation of the production process that indicated large amounts of wastage. The results were staggering and management realised that low-skilled employees have a direct impact on the productivity of the company due to a lack of communication skills. Due to the company’s demanding production schedule, that includes two shifts every day from Monday to Friday, management had concerns about implementation of outsourced BEE training on the only day available – a Saturday.
Solution: ABET addresses numeracy and literacy that are imperative for productivityAt Triple E Training we believe it is important to create awareness of the impact of training with the staff complement that has been selected for skills development. Since my client had a concern about the implementation of training on Saturdays I spent a considerable amount of time consulting with the group of 17 factory workers that have been pre-selected based on a combination of the client’s own skills audit and our own placement assessment. Although management expected resistance from its employees to attend training outside of working hours the group responded in a very positive way after understanding the significance of Adult Based Education and Training (ABET/AET). ABET, which is divided into five levels on NQF 1– level 1 basic, Level 1 (grade 3), Level 2 (grade 5), Level 3 (grade 7) and Level 4 (grade 9) – provides basic foundational learning tools as well as knowledge and skills. It addresses numeracy (mathematics) and literacy (communication in English) skills that are imperative for not only personal development but also for addressing output that in turns have an effect on profit margins. A skilled Tripe E Training facilitator commenced the SETA accredited ABET programme, Communication in English, on Saturdays on-site at my client’s training facility for the group of 17people. The BEE training sessions lasts three hours each and the project will take a total of 120 hours to be completed successfully.
