Challenge: Interruption to the logistics chain when the need for BEE Training arises
Organisations in the transport industry almost always face the challenge of interruption to the logistics chain when the need for training of its drivers arises. Each year hundreds of transport and courier companies face the same dilemma when it’s time to comply with the Skills Development element of the Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE/BEE) verification process. For my client the challenge at their site in Johannesburg was no different: they had a group of 14 drivers that could not be taken out of the logistics chain for a 120-hour training programme, especially since it was the first time they undertook any form of training.
Solution: ABET communication in English
After an initial placement assessment for my client, who operates in the transport industry, it was decided to commence one of Triple E Training’s Adult Based Education and Training (ABET/AET) modules: Communication in English. Registered with the Transport Education Training Authority (TETA), one of the skills development authorities that form part of the Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) in South Africa, this module that takes between five and six months to complete at six hours per week is the most popular for drivers. For this specific programme my client chose to use one of the training rooms at their facility in Johannesburg.
Expert Opinion: Workplace literacy in the transport industry is important
The transport sector is an important component of the economy impacting on development and the welfare of communities. When transport systems are efficient they provide economic and social opportunities and benefits that impact throughout the economy. When transport systems are deficient they can have an economic cost in terms of reduced or missed opportunities. In South Africa the transport industry generates over 10% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP); that relates to over R75-billion.
Adult literacy is defined as the ability to read, write, compute and use technology at a level that enables an individual to reach his full potential as an employee. To maintain employment, employees need to be able to read and comprehend all instructions related to their job. This may mean safety requirements, understanding and using technology, or simply communicating with others in their company.
Because we have more than 700 active trainers we were able to facilitate a suitable training timetable that fit my client’s logistics schedule. We were able to successfully offer ABET to a group of drivers without any interruption to my client’s logistics chain.
For my client it is important not only to achieve its BEE verification goal but also to ensure that its employees are able to follow directions to the point of delivery, follow specific delivery instructions and understand the consequence of delivering parcels timeously.
