AET for Skills Development enables my client to claim 125% of the actual spend

Challenge: Employees lack fundamental skills which makes supply chain management a real challenge

My client, a logistics company with a national footprint, has been experiencing productivity loss due to high levels of illiteracy within the ranks of its warehousing staff. The employees in the warehouses mostly do not have a clear understanding of what is required of them and because they lack fundamental skills like the ability to read and understand instructions in English it makes the supply chain management a real challenge.

Solution: AET is specifically designed for addressing fundamental skills

Because it is specifically designed for addressing fundamental skills like reading, writing, understanding, listening and numeracy I recommended Adult Education and Training (AET), also known as ABET, to my client.
At Triple E Training we have 10 different AET learning areas, all fully accredited by Umalusi. After an initial placement assessment during which the employees’ current skills are evaluated it was apparent that they lack the necessary skills in English and Mathematics. A group of 50 employees was selected to commence two AET Level 1 (Grade 3) learning areas: Communication in English (literacy) and Mathematics (numeracy).
Our national distribution of accredited AET facilitators made it possible for my client to commence the skills development programme at four different sites: Sandton, Ermelo, Middelburg and Nelspruit. Each site has been allocated a facilitator that will deliver two training session per week with a group of between 10 and 20 people. It takes 120 hours to complete one learning area which means that the entire project of skills development in English and Mathematics will take four years for employees to reach AET Level 4 (Grade 9).

Expert opinion: AET benefits the company by contributing to the overall BBBEE Strategy

Apart from AET for Skills addressing my client’s immediate need for the training of low-skilled employees it further benefits the company by contributing to my client’s overall BBBEE Strategy. Because AET is classified as Category B training on the skills matrix my client can score extra points on the skills development element of the BEE Scorecard. The training project can also be included in the Annual Training Report (ATR) and completed training can be reported in the annual Workplace Skills Plan (WSP). Because Triple E Training is an accredited service provider my client also qualifies to claim grant funding from the Transport Education and Training Authority (TETA).

Summary

At a total cost of R4-million my client will reach the goal of training 50 employees to reach AET Level 4 in Communication in English and Mathematics, as set out in its BBBEE Skills Development Strategy for the next four years. Not only will this result in compliance to the BBBEE Code of Good Practice but it will also improve the bottom line as a result of increased productivity linked to improved skills. What is significant to note is that my client will be able to claim 125% of the actual spend just because the skills development product chosen was AET.
