Challenge: Due to a high number of illiterate workers there is a risk of delaying project completion.My client, a member of the Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA), is experiencing a spurt in organic growth which means more projects and more pressure on employees to deliver quality projects within a certain deadline. With the majority of its employees located at remote mining sites around the country it is becoming more and more important to upskill the workforce to ensure that projects are completed timeously. My client realised that, due to a high number of illiterate workers who don’t always understand instructions in English, and who struggle to understand numbers, there is a risk of delaying project completion; a risk the company cannot take.
Solution: AET Communication in English – solving literacy challenges in the workplace.The best training programme for illiterate employees is Triple E Training’s Adult Education and Training (AET, also known as ABET) learning area: Communication in English. As an accredited training service provider with more than 20 years’ experience in solving literacy and numeracy challenges in the workplace we are able to, with the help of our network of skilled facilitators, improve low-skilled employees’ understanding of English and mathematics to such an extent that they are able to obtain an NQF 4 qualification or better. After conducting a placement assessment on my client’s employees it has been my recommendation to embark on a long-term skills development programme for the group of 30 low-skilled employees divided into two groups on two different operational sites. The employees will start off the five-year training project with Communication in English on AET level 1. Once completed they will commence with Mathematics on AET level 1 whilst simultaneously continuing with Communication in English on AET level 2. After five years the 30 employees will be on AET level 4 and ready for FET-level training.
Expert opinion: First develop a better understanding of EnglishIt is important to ensure that the low-skilled employees first develop a better understanding of English before starting them on Mathematics. If, during the placement assessment, it becomes clear that the majority of employees have no English comprehension, a skilled AET facilitator who speaks the vernacular of the area is sourced to conduct the training. This will help the learners to make a smooth transition from the vernacular to English and improve the success rate of the training programme.
