Challenge: Employees who are eager to learn but due to illiteracy are not able to make any progress
My client, a leading manufacturer in sensor technology, intrinsic safety and explosion protection equipment based in Kempton Park, has two employees who are eager to learn and develop their skills but due to illiteracy are not able to make any progress.
Passionate about employee skills development my client wants to uplift and empower these employees not only to improve their changes at career development but also to improve their personal life skills.
Solution: ABET addresses the fundamental skills of reading, writing and understanding
Adult Based Education and Training (ABET/AET) improves basic education and addresses the fundamental skills of reading, writing, understanding, listening, numeracy and mathematics. Through ABET communication skills and problem solving are improved which is the reason I suggested that my client’s employees embark on ABET Level 1 Basic through to ABET Level 4 in both Communication in English as well as the Mathematics learning areas.
At the time of writing the employees have already completed ABET Level 1 in Communication. Each level per learning area is a total of 120 hours and upon completion of the project in five years’ time the employees will be fully literate.

By completing all five ABET levels in these two learning areas (literacy and numeracy) the two employees will obtain their NQF1 qualification which is equal to that of Grade 9, the highest level within General Education and Training (GET).
This will allow them to progress into the Foundational Learning Competence (FLC) phase. FLC is specifically designed for ABET (NQF 1) learners as a fast-tracking programme that will provide the minimum competence required for learners to enter occupational learning at NQF Level 2 (Grade 10) to NQF Level 4 (Grade 12), the highest level within Further Education and Training.
