Empowering people through the provision of education is one of the cornerstones of a successful economy. If South Africa wants to be a globally competitive economy then it is absolutely essential that every citizen of the country has at least a basic education, is able to read, write and have a grasp of simple mathematics. Unfortunately this is not currently the case. The legacy of Apartheid means that business and government have to reach out to the illiterate with programs to right the wrongs of the past. Adult Basic Education and Training programs which are rolling out across South Africa are a successful example of just such outreaches.
