Training ABET skills, Literacy and numeracy skills development
With more than 8,000 employees at 32 production facilities my client in the manufacturing sector is a world market leader in refractories across the globe. One of its production facilities is based in Saldanah in the Western Cape where a need existed for literacy and numeracy skills development of its employees.
ABET for smaller groups reduce risk of delayed manufacturing
After conducting a standard placement assessment to determine the current competencies of its workforce it was recommended that the organisation embark on our Adult Basic Education and Training ABET skills ( AET ) numeracy and literacy modules: Numeracy/Mathematics as well as Communication in English.
We, at Triple E Training, believe it is critical to establish the correct starting point for each adult learner in order to increase the success of the ABET initiative. For this reason a small group of four employees started literacy and numeracy training of which the timetable was scheduled to coincide with the client’s production roster thus reducing the risk of delayed manufacturing.
ABET contributes to both WSP and ATR
According to Census 2011 only 7% of inhabitants of Saldanah speak English as a home language. The predominant languages in the area are Afrikaans (70.3%) and Xhosa (19.6%). The racial make-up of Saldanah comprises of 29.9% Black African and 54.3% Coloured individuals. It is therefore clear that a need to develop communication skills in English is crucial to the operation of one of the largest exporting ports of ore on the continent.
Training ABET skills through the implementation of the ABET initiative my client therefore did not only contribute to skills development of the Saldanah community but also obtained valuable data that can be used in submission of its Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) as well as its Annual Training Plan (ATR).
Each year organisations are required to submit its WSP and through Triple E Training’s placement assessment my client obtained data for its skills audit without having to spend any extra money. Because Triple E Training has full accreditation from Umalusi, which acts as the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, my client is also able to use the ABET attendance registers as part of proof of training need for its ATR.
Triple E Training’s accreditation status therefore allows for my client to be compensated by the Manufacturing, Engineer and Related Services Training Authority (merSETA) for money spent when they implemented the ABET initiative.
