Research has shown that adult literacy levels influence the economic earning capacity of the workforce. Although employers may see improvement of the employee adult literacy levels as a threat because higher remuneration levels will follow, the truth is that employers also benefit from higher adult literacy levels. There are multiple reasons for this. Employees will be able to perform better in the workplace and will thus be able to provide a positive contribution to the company’s growth. Instead of having to employ ten illiterate employees, six or seven literate employees will be able to understand machinery, problem solving and more. Fewer mistakes because of communication problems or lack of skills will be the end-result. The mistakes are often costly and when compared to the potential of higher remuneration, the higher remuneration because of a skilled workforce wins.
