The commitment of business to Adult Basic Education and Training and the importance of the programs to industry and commerce is demonstrated by the fact that over 70% of all ABET programs have been put in place by small and medium sized businesses. This commitment is heartening, given the high levels of illiteracy and lack of basic mathematical skills that have plagued South Africa since the days of the skewed Apartheid educational system. With this commitment South Africa can look forward to a brighter future. Although the journey has just begun, at least we have taken the first steps towards a brighter future.
