ABET courses

There are many ABET courses. However, the major focus of private-driven ABET is on imparting basic English literacy and numeracy skills to low skilled employees. This is because English literacy and numeracy are the absolute basic skills that members of your team need to perform at their peak. They are also foundational skills that enable people to continue learning. Refer to https://regqs.saqa.org.za/showQualification.php?id=71751 for more information on the various courses covered by South African Qualifications Authority-accredited ABET.

Also refer to  http://www.dhet.gov.za/Legal%20and%20Legislative%20Services/Adult%20Basic%20Education%20and%20Training%20Act%20No.%2052%20of%202000%20(GG21881.pdf. The Adult Basic Education and Training Act, 52 of 2000 provides for the establishment of public and private adult learning centres. This is in addition to funding for ABET provision; the governance of public centres; and quality assurance mechanisms for the sector. As a leading provider of adult literacy training and adult numeracy training, Triple E Training continues to set the benchmark in ABET. It always exceeds the basic quality parameters established for private ABET providers by state bodies.

ABET courses impart important skills

Our ABET courses impart important skills. Triple E Training’s adult literacy training teaches employees how to engage in a range of speaking/signing and listening interactions for a variety of purposes. Employees are also taught how to explore and use different strategies to learn. The English literacy component of our ABET also focuses on imparting the skills that are needed to read/view and respond to a range of text types. This is in addition to writing/signing for a variety of different purposes.

Adult numeracy training consists of mathematical literacy or mathematics and mathematical sciences. However, the latter two subjects are preferred by companies and, therefore, a focus of Triple E Training. This is considering that they impart numeracy skills that are actually required in the workplace and form a solid foundation for further learning. Enterprising companies want their employees to keep on learning so that they can grow and develop their careers and as individuals inside and outside the world of work. Employees who have completed our mathematics and mathematical sciences courses know how to work with patterns in various contexts.

They are also able to describe, represent and interpret mathematical models in various settings. Employees who have completed these ABET numeracy courses are also able to critically analyse how mathematics is used in social, political and economic relations. Moreover, they are able to analyse cultural products and processes as representations of shape, space and time. Mathematical literacy teaches employees how to describe and represent objects. This is in terms of shape, space and measurement. Employees are also taught how to evaluate and solve data handling and probability problems within given contexts. They also learn how to work with measurement in a variety of contexts.

ABET English literacy courses

Our quality ABET English literacy courses equip your employees with the skills that they need to be effective communicators in the workplace. Efficient communication is essential in any business. Our clients report improved engagement in the workplace after investing in our ABET. Employee engagement is a key measure for employee productivity and potential retention. When employees are engaged, it shows that they are confident in their abilities and know that their efforts are valued by their employers. Morale is also higher among team members who have completed our adult literacy training.

This is because team members know what is required of them and how their efforts contribute to the overall success of the company. There is also a notable improvement in productivity. This is because improved communication enables employees to better understand how to perform their duties correctly. This includes undertaking their duties in a healthy and safe manner. There is no uncertainty that can lead to mistakes, lost time or accidents. They also undertake their functions efficiently and in a stress-free manner. There is also reduced churn in companies that invest in improving the communication skills of their employees. Experience is extremely valuable and losing and replacing it can be disruptive and costly. Importantly, efficient communication also facilitates greater collaboration between members of a team.

There is also less conflict due to miscommunication in the workplace. Miscommunication remains the biggest contributor to tension and conflict in the workplace. Eliminating or reducing it improves company culture and creates an environment that is conducive to productivity and efficiency. Employees who have completed our adult literacy training and adult numeracy training are also more motivated to want to perform well. They understand why they are expected to perform their duties in a specific manner and, therefore, remember these processes. Employees’ “whys” have been substantiated by an informative “because” by their managers, supervisors and other higher-ups.

ABET numeracy courses

Employees who have completed our ABET numeracy courses are able to think logically and critically. They are, therefore, able to solve problems of a mathematical nature with limited supervision. There are many ways in which employees use numeracy in the workplace. Most – if not all – employees need to have a knowledge of numbers and figures and be able to interpret mathematical information.

They also need to understand relationships between numbers and have an ability to remember formulas and organise information. Another important numeracy skill is the ability to produce visual perception of information. This is in addition to understanding trends and being able to perform various calculations. Employees who have completed our ABET also have measurement and data analysis skills. Adult numeracy training complements adult literacy training. Communication plays an important role in making mathematics meaningful. It enables people to construct links between their informal, intuitive notions and the abstract language and symbolism of mathematics.

ABET courses and workplace literacy

Our ABET courses incrementally impart workplace literacy skills, starting from ABET Level 1 and ending with ABET Level 4. Workplace literacy is often used interchangeably with functional literacy. UNESCO defines functional literacy as “the capacity of a person to engage in all those activities in which literacy is required for effective function of his or her group and community and for enabling him or her to continue to use reading, writing and calculation for his or her own and the community’s development”. https://en.unesco.org/themes/literacy provides an overview of UNESCO’s commendable global literacy efforts. UNESCO notes that literacy is now understood to be a means of identifying, understanding, interpreting, creating and communicating.

This is in “an increasingly digital, text-mediated, information-rich and fast-changing world”. The workplace in particular has evolved at a rapid rate. Like their international counterparts, South African companies are relying increasingly on sophisticated skills. This is as they gradually automate and mechanise their processes to raise productivity, efficiency and safety by reducing or even completely eliminating human error. In this era, literacy and numeracy are the absolute basic skills that employees need to secure and sustain employment.

Yet, as UNESCO notes, there are at least 773-million youth and adults who cannot read and write globally. At the same time, about 250-million children throughout the world are failing to acquire basic literacy skills, fuelling the cycle of illiteracy. This emphasises the importance of adult literacy training and adult numeracy training, especially in a country such as South Africa where functional illiteracy is especially high. https://www.dhet.gov.za/Planning%20Monitoring%20and%20Evaluation%20Coordination/Fact%20Sheet%20on%20Adult%20Illiteracy%20in%20South%20Africa%20-%20March%202021.pdf provides more reading on the topic.

ABET courses prioritised

Increasing access to ABET courses is one of the suggestions made by UNESCO to advance literacy as an integral part of lifelong learning and to help countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4). For more information on the SDGs and specifically SDG 4, refer to https://sdgs.un.org/goals. SDG 4 aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. This goal essentially underpins all of the other SDGs. Its importance can, therefore, not be overstated. Through the provision of quality adult literacy training and adult numeracy training, companies are playing their part in breaking the back of illiteracy.
