What does Umalusi mean?

Umalusi comes from the Nguni word Umalusi and means shepherd or guardian of the family belongings, resources, and valuables. As such Umalusi in the context of quality assurance in education means to take care or shepherd the nation’s valuable assets of knowledge which comes from education and training. As guardian Umalusi endeavours to support and further education and training as the guardian is expected to do for a family. It also endeavours to be strict to ensure that the training providers keep to the guidelines provided and keep the high standard of general and further education and training. As such quality assurance authorities such as Umalusi ensure that the qualifications obtained in South Africa will be recognized anywhere in the country and that our qualifications can also be recognized by overseas institutions.
