When the rioters took to the Soweto street decades ago it was in protest of the use of Afrikaans in the township schools. Their actions directly led to the downfall of the Apartheid system, the domino effect of the riots spelt the end of a grossly unfair and cruel system. However the legacy of Apartheid was also illiteracy and a population doomed to poverty and unable to contribute to the wellbeing of communities across South Africa. Today Adult Basic Education and Training is changing all of that and changing the lives of the victims of a skewed Apartheid educational system. ABET is freeing many in South Africa from the shackles of ignorance.
